The Math Institutes

All content is aligned to CCSS and the SMPs.

Our institutes will support district and school-building leaders, math coaches, math specialists, math teachers and parents with research-based practices around effective math teaching and learning. Some institutes have a minimum session requirement in order for participants to optimize and sustain continuity in their learning.

The  FMS Math Institutes will

  • Ensure appropriate curriculum alignment
  • Help extend content and pedagogical capacity
  • Improve instructional practices
  • Transform mathematical mindsets in administrators, math coaches, math teachers, parents and students

Math Principal Institute (MPI)

Institute Description

The Math Principal Institute creates a lane to provide principals, assistant principals, and school and district-based leaders with actionable touch points on how to support their math teachers in more productive ways. Math educators play a valuable role in ensuring high student achievement and student mastery of deep mathematical knowledge. Much of the time though, they feel like they are on an island on their own, with everyone expecting for them to be the “sole math savior” for students. This institute will support leaders in raising their depth of knowledge and confidence in mathematics so that they can take the necessary steps to better support high-quality teaching and learning in mathematics…

Math Coaching Institute (MCI)

Institute Description

Building and sustaining the capacity of a Math Coach is one of the most important investments that a school can make to increase student achievement. During this institute, math coaches in close partnership with their building leaders, will learn how to effectively support their teachers using the FMS Coaching Cycle Framework. Through this design, math coaches will begin to use high-leverage techniques, to coach “heavy” or “light”, that will improve math teaching and learning for all.

Math Teacher Institute (MTI)

Institute Description

This institute provides teachers with actionable touch points on how to best provide their students with compelling, fun, relevant, rigorous, and supportive mathematics instruction. MTI equips teachers with the knowledge and confidence to employ the most effective teaching practices to ensure their students learn grade level standards while also inculcating positive math identities among them. Through interactive professional development sessions, teachers learn how to use precise mathematical language and questioning techniques to drive student discourse, techniques for improving engagement during remote learning, and how to ensure students can apply their conceptual knowledge to solve real world-problems.

Math Institute for Parents (MIP)

Institute Description

During this unprecedented time of remote and hybrid learning, it is critical that parents have the tools they need to support their students. Beyond spending hours at the kitchen table practicing the same math problems with your child, there are a number of effective and practical approaches that parents can use to support their children’s math education. This institute will provide parents and caregivers with the tools and frameworks necessary to engage their child in critical thinking, while helping them to promote a positive mathematical mindset. This training will also provide parents with the skills to make math fun and engaging to ensure that their child is prepared to problem-solve and apprehend new concepts, regardless of their learning style.

Math Substitute Institute (MSI)

Institute Description

During this “great resignation” teachers are leaving the educational profession in large numbers. As school districts prepare to hire a larger number of substitutes and retired professionals with little to no formal math education training, it is necessary for school leadership to also establish a plan on how to support these professionals. The Math Substitute Institute will provide substitute math teachers with ongoing support , tools, and math content knowledge to ensure students have a full math experience.

Specific sessions include, but not limited to:

  • Understanding the volume formula for a rectangular prism
  • Comparing two proportional relationships
  • Understanding the concept of whole number exponents
  • Representing problems using an exponential equation
  • Understanding the features for the graph of a parabola
